FAQ   Frequently Asked Questions
for MVLS Volunteers

Q. When I volunteer to take a case, will I be covered by MVLS' malpractice insurance?

A. Yes, all volunteers are covered by our $1 million per claim malpractice insurance.

----

Q. How are court costs and other fees handled?

A. MVLS reimburses for certain out-of-pocket expenses, such as long distance calls, and reproduction of certain medical records. We do not reimburse for filing fees. Other court fees may be waived if requested when you enter your appearance.  Click here for waiver forms and click here for information on reimbursements.

----

Q. Do I need to keep track of my time spent on the case?

A.  Yes. MVLS is required to report the number of volunteer hours and the dollar value of those hours to our funders. We will send you a form for the required reporting.

----

Q.  What do I do if I need a more experienced attorney to help me with my case?

A. You should ask for a mentor when you accept the case.

----

Q. What do I do if the client doesn't call me or fails to appear for a scheduled meeting?

A. We request that you attempt to contact the client either by letter or phone. If unsuccessful after two weeks, call the paralegal responsible for the case and she will follow-up with the client.

----

Q.  Who do I contact if I want to be added to your volunteer panel or have questions?

A. You should first submit a volunteer application.  You may also contact MVLS at info@mvlslaw.org or 443-451-4062 with questions.

----

Q. How do clients qualify?

A: MVLS follows Maryland Legal Services Corporation’s income eligibility guidelines.  Clients may earn no more than 50% of the Maryland Median Income click here for income guidelines.  Clients may own one home and one car and have limited assets.   Applicants are required to submit proof of income.

----

Q. How does MVLS get its funding?

A. MVLS is a 501(c)(3) nonprofit organization that receives financial support from MLSC, foundations, corporations, government grants, law firms, and individual donors.

----

Q:  Do I have to take a case to volunteer?

A:  No, there are other ways to volunteer.  While our greatest need is for volunteer attorneys to handle pro bono cases, we also need mentors, interpreters, and mediators.  We also have an ongoing need for attorneys to prepare training manuals and brochures on a variety of legal topics, as well as attorneys to teach training seminars for our volunteer attorneys.
