Services for Nonprofits
The Community Development Project provides free legal assistance to nonprofit organizations and community groups engaged in strengthening and revitalizing low-income communities throughout Maryland. These organizations face the same complex legal issues that confront any small business, but lean budgets make it difficult for them to pay for legal assistance. We help nonprofits overcome these obstacles so they can become more effective organizations and focus their limited resources on services for disadvantaged people and communities. As a volunteer you can advise and represent them in a broad range of transactional matters that they may face, such as:
Corporate
- Corporate governance issues
- Formation of subsidiary corporations
- Reviewing contracts
- Updating bylaws
Intellectual Property
- Licensing agreements
- Trademarks and copyrights
Labor & Employment
- Personnel issues
- Preparing employee or volunteer manuals and policies
Real Estate
- Clarifying ownership of land parcels
- Negotiating office leases
- Real estate sales and purchases
- Reviewing loan documents
- Zoning matters
Tax
- Advice on maintenance of 501(c)(3) tax exempt status
- Obtaining tax exempt status
- Unrelated business income tax questions
